What is Sexually Transmitted infection?

The term sexually transmitted disease (STD) is used to refer to a condition passed from one person to another through sexual contact. You can contract an STD by having unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the STD.

An STD may also be called a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or venereal disease (VD).

That doesn’t mean sex is the only way STDs are transmitted. Depending on the specific STD, infections may also be transmitted through sharing needles and breastfeeding.

Diagnosis

If you have some of the symptoms described in this article or think you may have a sexually transmitted infection, you’ll need a medical exam to diagnose and determine the best treatment for the specific STI. Your doctor will ask you questions about your symptoms and perform a physical exam. To help diagnose STI, your doctor may order blood tests, urine tests, or may take a swab from the genital area, which will be sent to a laboratory for evaluation.

Sexually active individuals, particularly those with multiple partners, are recommended to have regular checkups with a family doctor. In some cases, there are no obvious symptoms and the infections that cause STIs can only be identified through regular STI screening tests.

Treatment

Dr. Vishal Gore is one of the best dermatologist in Pune providing best treatment on the Sexually transmitted Infection. What are the most common types of STIs/STDs and how are they treated?

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Genital Herpes
  • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
  • Hepatitis B (HBV)
  • Genital Warts (HPV)
  • Trichomoniasis

This is the most common bacterial STI in India. An estimated 1.4 million new cases are diagnosed each year. It is transmitted through unprotected vaginal and anal sex. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) caused by bacteria are generally easier to treat. Viral infections can be managed but not always cured. If you are pregnant and have an STI, getting treatment right away can prevent or reduce the risk of your baby becoming infected.

Treatment for STIs usually consists of one of the following, depending on the infection:

  • Antibiotics. Antibiotics, often in a single dose, can cure many sexually transmitted bacterial and parasitic infections, including gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis. Typically, you’ll be treated for gonorrhea and chlamydia at the same time because the two infections often appear together.

Once you start antibiotic treatment, it’s necessary to follow through. If you don’t think you’ll be able to take medication as prescribed, tell your doctor. A shorter, simpler course of treatment may be available.
